A Real American Hero

“One chance is all you need” – Jesse Owens

As we watch the Covid affected Olympics in Tokyo, it seems to me we need a “real hero”. Someone who can life our spirits by winning Gold, but more importantly through their display of character can really make us proud of the Red, White, and Blue during this difficult time we are living through. My mind goes back to the Olympics of 1936. Adolph Hitler was espousing the superiority of the White Race and getting ready to kill millions of innocents as he waged war in Europe. A young Black man soon was to quietly shut him up. American track star Jesse Owens defeated the Fuhrer’s best not once, not twice, but a remarkable four times, winning the 100 and 200 meter races, the long jump, and as a member of the relay team. Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy was crushed by this amazing Gold medalist! Owens is also remembered for some simple but eloquent quotes that still live today:

We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.”

” Find the good. It’s all around you. Find it, showcase it and you’ll start believing in it.”

-Jesse Owens (b. 1913 – d. 1980)
